Today, Peter Fortune MP urged the Transport Secretary Louise Haigh to discourage London Mayor Sadiq Khan from introducing road pricing.
Peter's question comes after London Centric exposed a top-secret Transport for London plan to impose a pay-per-mile charge on motorists. Sadiq Khan commissioned the plan while denying he had plans to impose road pricing in London when asked by Peter, who served as Bromley's London Assembly Member from 2021 to 2024. Under the plan, drivers would be charged £2 per mile plus a £5 fee per day in central London, 60p per mile in inner London, and 40p per mile in outer London, including Bromley and Biggin Hill.
In response, the Transport Secretary said: "The Mayor has repeatedly made clear he has no plans to act on road user charging". Mayor Khan also denied that he planned to expand the £12.50 daily Ulez charge across Greater London before doing so.
Afterwards, Peter Fortune MP said: "Today, I asked the Transport Secretary whether she would say no to Sadiq Khan's pay-per-mile plans. She denied he had them. But London Centric exposed the Mayor's plans to charge drivers up to 60p per mile. Labour in London are preparing to fleece motorists."
