Peter Fortune MP has urged the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to approve a new flightpath trial for planes landing at Biggin Hill Airport to reduce noise pollution for nearby residents.
In a letter to the CAA, Mr Fortune said Bromley and Biggin Hill residents had waited more than seven years for a new, quieter flightpath. The idea was first proposed in the airport's 2016 Noise Action Plan, but the aviation regulator has yet to agree.
The proposals for an alternative instrument approach to runway 03 could remove 30% of flights from the existing flight path over quiet residential areas across the London Borough of Bromley.
After the initial application was rejected, Biggin Hill Airport is understood to have provided new information and requested a trial. Mr Fortune joined Bromley Council in urging the CAA to find a way forward. He reiterated the strong local support for the proposals to reduce noise pollution locally.
Mr Fortune said: "Biggin Hill Airport is an important local economic hub with a proud history as a Royal Air Force station. However, as an airport within Greater London, it must take all possible steps to reduce noise pollution in the local area.
"People have waited seven years for the Civil Aviation Authority and Biggin Hill Airport to agree on a new, quieter flight path. While the regulator must carefully examine all safety considerations, people locally deserve a response soon so we can finally take this positive step to reduce noise pollution locally."
